Backsplash

A Kitchen Backsplash can add a lot of extra panache to any kitchen. Originally designed to attach to the back of a stovetop or to the wall behind a kitchen countertop to protect against splashed liquids and spills, the prominence of a backsplash makes it a focal point of design as well as function. The kitchen backsplash can help bring together the color palettes of the various rooms in your home that make up your home décor scheme.

j

Many kitchen designers advise setting backsplash color in contrast to your kitchen countertops, picking up on elements of the floor or kitchen fixtures that will not change over time, as opposed to using appliances and accessories that are more likely to be changed and replaced after a while.

j

Kitchen backsplashes are available in a variety of textures and colors. Some of the more popular backsplashes are listed below:

j
  • Glass – This type of kitchen backsplash is also known as acrylic-block. Glass backsplash can be combined with clay and arranged into glittering mosaics.
  • Ceramic Tiles – Ceramic is a man-made material baked at high temperatures until hardened. Scratch-resistant and easy to clean, ceramic tile is also more easily replaceable in case of damaged tiles. And as an added bonus, ceramic tiles fiery birth lends a measure of fire resistance to your floor.  Ceramic is offered in a wide variety of colors.
  • Granite – Granite is a good material for a kitchen backsplash, especially if you want to add real value to your home. A granite kitchen backsplash can be both beautiful and extremely durable.
  • Stainless Steel – Aside from the ease of cleaning, having a stainless steel kitchen backsplash can make the perfect design statement for your kitchen. Stainless steel tiles could also be a good way to make your kitchen look more exciting and fresh.

These are some of the more creative and non-traditional backsplash ideas:

  • 3-D Collage—This is quite easy to do and a lot of fun to create yourself. A backsplash of clear resin allows you to embed neat objects right into it. The result is a very cool, interesting collage of household objects.
  • Pressed Tin Tiles—Another trendy idea for a creative backsplash is making designs in tin, such as different shapes and symbols. Old tin tiles can be revamped by creating eye-popping pressings for not a lot of money.
  • Geometric Glass Tiles—Small tiles are used in this design to create a “Tetris”-type look with different colors and textures. Mix and match colors to make any design you want, whether it’s large or small blocks of color or lines.
  • Mirrored Backsplashes—Wonderful for the image-conscious who like to watch themselves cook. Seriously though, these are made out of “thermo-foil” and are extremely strong and don’t succumb to cracks, breakage, or chipping.
  • Cartoon Backsplash Pick your own cartoon laminate design for a hip way to update your kitchen.
  • Natural Stone—Polished granite, marble, and tumbled stone are all options that offer almost as much versatility as ceramic tile. Porous stone needs to be treated and sealed to prevent stains.
  • Plate Glass—Clear plate glass can protect painted surfaces (think fresco) or add its own style. Pale green glass panels with embedded wire is just one intriguing possibility. Stainproof and easy to clean, installation can be tricky.
  • Glass block—It’s definitely not a weekend project and requires major construction, but glass block is very cool, easy to clean, and adds lots of ambient light to your kitchen.

Hello Helen, Here is a program that you can use to 'visualize' your interior design scheme. It's free to try for 15 days, I have this myself, it's very user friendly. I'm not sure about 'cut out' templates though, I think this might be helpful to you. If the link doesn't work down there, the program is called Punch Professional Home Design Suite. Good luck. Read more

arch 101 An efficient work triangle in the kitchen doesn't have to be equilateral but it does help to keep it reasonably close. Measure the distance between the 3 major work areas, sink, cook top, and refrigerator. Total the distance between the three. The optimum distance should be between 12-21 feet. In an equilateral triangle that's 4 to 7 feet per side. There are other things to consider such as how many people will be cooking at the same time and is there enough space to accommodate all persons comfortably. Read more

'Kitchen backsplash ideas' Designing a kitchen is as much a science as it is an art. Knowing the recommended measurements to use when planning the project can make all the difference in the final outcome. Here are important guidelines for your kitchen design project. 1. For efficiency, the work triangle (the space between the sink, refrigerator, and stove) should measure 26' or less with no single side longer than 9', or less than 4'. 2. In kitchens smaller than 150 sq. ft., opt for at least 13' of base cabinets, 12' of wall cabinets, and 11' of countertop. In kitchens which are larger, go with at least 16' of base cabinets, 15 1/2' of wall cabinets, and 16 1/2' of countertop. i also found the great link about the kitchen especialy kitchen backsplash ideas for u..
