Kitchen Lighting Ideas

Your lighting scheme is one of the most important aspects to kitchen design and planning, without proper lighting your kitchen just doesn’t look right. Your choice in lighting will either enhance or diminish your Kitchen Layout or kitchen style. It’s paramount that you get the lighting right since the Kitchen is the most important room in the house.

j

Purist might disagree but many homeowners will combine elements from different styles and periods. In fact, some of the most aesthetically pleasing kitchens have come from the growing trend in transitional kitchen style.

j

Good Kitchen lighting design is functional but it can also be used to enhance the décor. Todays kitchen lighting design provides for decorative lighting, recessed lighting and accent lighting.

j

Most homeowners do not place the necessary importance on lighting.  Lighting accentuates the most important elements of kitchen design and style.  It creates the mood and character of the overall design theme as well as to emphasize or not to emphasize certain details.  A good lighting plan is essential in designing the perfect kitchen and capturing the necessary look and feel.  There are many varieties of lighting use from a layered look, increasing the size and depth of the kitchen, or highlighting decorative wall fixtures.

j

When considering your kitchen lighting plan, consider the following lighting options:

j

Ceiling Lighting, which includes chandeliers, recessed lighting, swag lighting or pendant lighting and track lighting.

j

Wall Lighting, which includes wall sconces.

j

Lamps, which include kitchen accent lamps.

j

Specialty Lighting, which includes undercounter lighting, or task lighting, ambient lighting and accent lighting.

j

Consider This
Since there are many different types of activities that occur in the kitchen, it is important to consider these in your lighting plan. For instance, you may want to light your kitchen differently when doing end-of-day cleaning versus an intimate after-hours snack with your spouse or friend.

j

If you have the space, and feel that your kitchen plan requires it, floor lamps may be an option to consider.

Hello Helen, Here is a program that you can use to 'visualize' your interior design scheme. It's free to try for 15 days, I have this myself, it's very user friendly. I'm not sure about 'cut out' templates though, I think this might be helpful to you. If the link doesn't work down there, the program is called Punch Professional Home Design Suite. Good luck. Read more

arch 101 An efficient work triangle in the kitchen doesn't have to be equilateral but it does help to keep it reasonably close. Measure the distance between the 3 major work areas, sink, cook top, and refrigerator. Total the distance between the three. The optimum distance should be between 12-21 feet. In an equilateral triangle that's 4 to 7 feet per side. There are other things to consider such as how many people will be cooking at the same time and is there enough space to accommodate all persons comfortably. Read more

'Kitchen backsplash ideas' Designing a kitchen is as much a science as it is an art. Knowing the recommended measurements to use when planning the project can make all the difference in the final outcome. Here are important guidelines for your kitchen design project. 1. For efficiency, the work triangle (the space between the sink, refrigerator, and stove) should measure 26' or less with no single side longer than 9', or less than 4'. 2. In kitchens smaller than 150 sq. ft., opt for at least 13' of base cabinets, 12' of wall cabinets, and 11' of countertop. In kitchens which are larger, go with at least 16' of base cabinets, 15 1/2' of wall cabinets, and 16 1/2' of countertop. i also found the great link about the kitchen especialy kitchen backsplash ideas for u..
